Our Story

Stardust Jiu Jitsu is a grappling studio, and place for kids of all backgrounds and abilities to experiment with complex movement, feel supported, and thrive. We are a passionate place, led by a lifelong grappling coach and child psychiatrist, and we enjoy an environment of child empowerment and joy. At Stardust Jiu Jitsu you will find the values of love, family, connection, perseverance, hope, peace, protection, and soul.

At our studio, we offer classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, American Wrestling, and Creative Movement. All classes are conducted with strict adherence to safety, in an atmosphere of play and self discovery.

Stardust Jiu Jitsu emphasizes bridge-building and problem solving. We seek to develop and empower lifelong leaders. Each day on the mats at Stardust Jiu Jitsu, we are driven by the idea that, while we all may seem a little different from each other, we are all literally made of the same elements as each other...elements that were brought to earth as a result of stars exploding and spreading their elemental materials all over the Universe. We are all connected to each other in many ways, we can solve problems together, and we remember we are all made of stardust!! ✨

Dr. Lucas Trautman, MD, MPH

Head Coach

Coach Lucas believes that every child deserves a fun, safe, healthy, supportive, creative outlet during their developmental journey. As a child psychiatrist, Coach Lucas loves applying his clinical knowledge and experience to create an environment where children are empowered with the tools they need to be successful on that journey. Jiu Jitsu is a unique and valuable tool to achieve that goal, because it connects us to each other, it is fun and challenging, and it cultivates healthy psychological development.

A former team captain and national competitor in over 200 matches for the storied CBHS Wrestling program in the 80’s and 90’s Coach Lucas has developed and coached numerous high school state champions, All-Americans, and NCAA D1 wrestlers over the years, and remains a USA Wrestling Bronze Certified Coach. Coach Lucas proudly holds the rank of brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under 3rd degree black belt world champion, Professor Matthias Meister.

Coach Hannah, a life long martial artist and ISSA Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Specialist in Fitness Nutrition, has a deep love of coaching, mentoring, and guiding her clients to reach their personal goals. She is technical and encouraging, informed by her two decades of training and coaching. Coach Hannah’s early life was marked by her training in Taekwondo and Shotokan Karate, in which she achieved the rank of Sandan (third degree black belt). 15 years ago she began her journeys in Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (4 stripe purple belt).

Coach Hannah enjoyed a robust competition career, culminating in winning the International Kickboxing Federation Muay Thai World Championship in 2008. She has also competed in MMA and Judo. For the past 6 years, she has taught Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu to adults and children, and also taught fitness kickboxing, fitness boxing, weight lifting, personal training, and nutrition planning. At Stardust Jiu Jitsu, Coach Hannah will lead an invigorating morning adult class, with a purpose of making the art of Jiu Jitsu accessible to all levels of ability.

NOLA BJJ is the premier Jiu Jitsu and grappling organization in the New Orleans area.

Under the guidance of 3rd degree BJJ black belt and World Champion Matthias Meister, NOLA BJJ is an organization of 4 schools in New Orleans, training hundreds of athletes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, Kickboxing, and Eskrima. Promoted to black belt in Jiu Jitsu by Carlos Gracie, Jr, Professor Meister has cultivated the growth of NOLA BJJ to its current big beautiful size.

Professor Trautman, having spent many years of his life growing up in and doing his medical training in New Orleans, met Professor Meister years ago, and was drawn to his leadership style. Professor Meister has a deep wisdom as a martial artist, with a vision to recognize what each of his students needs to thrive, an empathic view of the world, and an unyielding strength. It is such a vital practice to pursue continued self improvement in life, and Professor Meister guides Professor Trautman’s journey of growth and improvement as a martial artist. For these reasons, Stardust Jiu Jitsu is a proud affiliate of NOLA BJJ.

The students of both Stardust Jiu Jitsu and NOLA BJJ share a rich history of perseverance. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the coast of Louisiana. This storm left New Orleans in ruins, costing most their homes and many their lives. During the weeks following the storm, emergency personnel from around the U.S. went from house to house searching for survivors. They marked the houses they searched by spray painting a large X with different annotations indicating if anyone had been found, dead or alive.

For New Orleans residents, this X has come to represent their city just as much as the Fleur de Lis or Superdome. It has come to symbolize the resilience, undying spirit, and sense of community amongst the citizens of New Orleans. In Memphis, many of the students of Stardust Jiu Jitsu are descendants of survivors of cataclysmic events, such as the 1878 Yellow Fever Epidemic (which killed 5,000 people in the city of Memphis within a month), and the grizzly histories of slavery, lynchings, and Jim Crow. We will never forget what happened that fateful August in New Orleans, nor will we forget our ancestors in Memphis who suffered these horrors; but, more importantly, we will never forget that we all were able to persevere and overcome. It is for these reasons that NOLA BJJ adopted this X as their logo, and why we display this X at Stardust Jiu Jitsu.

Our school is a team and a community that can’t be broken. We will persevere through whatever hardships lie in front of us, we shall emerge stronger and closer than before, and we will be healers and protectors in our ever-divided world. This is NOLA BJJ!! This is Stardust Jiu Jitsu!!!
